What I like about your technique is that it offers a way to make a character that could be use by both version of the software in using switch layer or action file.
I just learn how to create group from this video as well.
I just realize using the masking effect to make eyes, that it would be harder to create switch and action together!
I saw the other eye making video and both were good, but I did pick up something new in this one and it was very well put!

Yes, good job. I like that the session is straight forward without any digressions or missteps.
Useful tutorial and actually covers a lot of important techniques such as shape buiding, filling shapes, selection groups, switches, and actions. This method without masking is good if you want to export to swf in particular.
