TV light on character effect

Post by cucumihai »

Hi.
I'm looking for a good way to make the light from a tv to projects onto the character.
I tried a few thinks and the best solution i found was to make a circle with soft edges, bring the opacity to ~15 and change the colors randomly in the timelime to make the "moving scenes" effect.
It works ok but but not that good.
Do you have any ideas on how i could make it to look better?

Thanks.

Try with different layer blending modes too.

I tried every blending mode but it's not wrking like in Photoshop. Reducing the opacity makes the same effect as some blending modes in AS.

GCharb, can you explaing a little more about gradient and masking in this situation?

Thank you for the quick replays.

Perhaps it would be more convincing if you add shadows as well.

When ever there is a bright light, shadows are inevitable. But not just for the character, background should also be shaded and illuminated. I think if you add those shadows and bright spots.. it would be more convincing. This said, bright and shaded shapes don`t have to be too precise and complex.

Masking would be my choice too, but I would use just blinking/flickering of the hole mask.

p.s.
I`ve just seen it`s a daylight scene. In that case why not just a flare around the tv set?

What Maestral says. The whole room should be darker, with more contrast, and of course the furniture should cast shadows. I made a fast sketch:

If you now have the main shadows move a bit (flickering) you don't need any light on that guy's face.

Yes it's a daylight scene but the curtains are a bit closed so i'll probably put some shadows (I also added a vignete so it has more contrast), small and barely noticeable. I think the idea of a flare around the tv will give a convincible effect.
Thank you very much, you solved my problem.

The light from a TV will also flicker because the images change.
