This was done at a german art academy (coincidentially the one where I was using the rostrum camera some 15 years ago). The article says the artwork was done in Illustrator and the animation in AfterFX.

The silhouette style works nicely, the designs are flawless. I especially like his way to do turns, and the way he indicates the water, especially when showing the castaways from under and above water. The way he "moves" the legs is ... interesting. I'll file this under "advanced puppetry", which is nothing bad.
