Moho Animation Contest Entry: 5 (Painting)

Hi all:

I am glad to share with this great forum, the fruit of my work in animation in the last month, reply to the FIRST MOHO CONTEST (see final note).

I must to said, I enjoy very much with 2d animation. Moho able me obtain the dream of made drawing animated. Thanks that, one man can to do the job a lot of man in the past. And this is great.

Well…my short have a duration exactly one minute.

The work flow was:

- First the idea; then storyboard playing with painter and WACOM tablet.
- Second drew the actor (front, side, 3/4, etc.)
- I done 5 or 6 parts rendered with DIVX 5.0.5 codec in format avi.
- Then I edited all in ADOBE PREMIERE 5.0 music, video, and title and render to “wma” (very little weight in 320x240 format: 1,6 Mb).

Tips:

Basically I have used the great new features 3D and Actions. I made the room directly with moho (thanks to 7feet for help me), and the stair is a 3d object made with wings3d (great free app). I did the “painting” effect using mask and switch layers.

Very nicely done. You must have some experience painting as your character animation seemed accurate as he checked his work while painting.

Funny, it somehow looked very much like a animation from a 1970's childrens' program. They all had those weird in-between animations for some reason and the animation and music were all quite "retro".
Character design is good but the walking could use some tweaking and the climbing animation could use some more frames but the complete animation works very nicely.

Good, simple idea, and well timed out. Like nobudget, I was also strongly reminded of seventies children's animation - in particular the little shorts in Sesame Street ("This show has been brought to you by the number 5").

Good use of dissolves to edit the action, and while the ladder climbing is jerky, in a way it doesn't matter - you just want to get him up there without fuss.

Great Job. I love it!! My favorite so far I think. I am watching most of these for the first time, I can't see them on my Mac so I am onmy pc. I did notice the jerky ladder thing everyone was talking about but I liked the effect it gave. I thought it was intentinal. I hope to enter the next contest (Hopefully there is one). Anyway, Great job I like it.

Yes...We have for childrens, and we lived in a lot of houses,
and then my wife and I learned to paint; but to animate this
short I record me climbing a ladder with our new SONY CAMERA
DSC72 and I record me climbinb. I have the clip. I send you
when I have time.

I haven't tried to draw this short looking for to seem this style.
But when I saw your repply I think: yes it is. Its right, specially
the wall's color, music and character walking at side or front as the
flinkstones or street sessame. I remember this little short to learn
kids letters or numbers...because I born in 1970

I loved this when I saw at first time after rendered.
I think this detailt in the storyboard.

Yes, I warned this effect. In front views, in moho we must animate
frame to frame, because the use of bones is very dificult.
But I would like to share with you one thought writed in
the excelent Mark Clarskson's book FLASH 5 CARTOONING:

"The first step to selling your cartoon is to get it out there.
There's a saying that 'perfect is the enemy of good enough'.
There's a tendency among all creative types to hold onto their
work forever, to keep reworking it, tweaking it, fidding with it,
forever, to say 'I want to make a little bit better before
I show it to anyone'.
Now, far be it for me to suggest that you shouldn't be critical
of your own work, that you shouldn't strive for perfection-
you should. But you don't achive perfection in a particular
cartoon;you build toward it over a body of work, by making
every cartoon better than the last. And you can't to do that
if you spend eternity working on that first cartoon.
There are thousands of first novels, songs, poems, painting,
and cartoons out there, hidden away in drawers, closets,
and shoeboxes full of floppies. In most cases, that's where
they belong, but the authors will never know until they let their
work out into the world for others to see, to criticize and,
posibly, to embrace.
Get it out there. You're never going to sell your work
while it's sitting on your hard disk...
