When using the freehand drawing tool is there anyway possible to turn off or hide the 'points' that appear on the lines? Those points are very, very distracting.

Click the "Display Quality" popup in the bottom-right of the main editing window. In the panel that appears, uncheck the "Construction curves" box.
This will hide the editing points, but it will also hide the underlying curves - you will only see the curves you draw with the freehand tool if you have "Auto Outline" turned on for the freehand tool.
Tip: the magnet tool can be useful for editing curves when the control points are hidden.
