Bubble Trail

Post by DK »

Hi Everyone.
I have to do a bubble trail for insert into a cartoon I am working on and it's something I've never done before. Does anyone know how they would go about animating this? So the bubble trail is supposed to represent some underwater monsters traveling under the water?
Many thanks for any help/suggestions on this.
Cheers

Like this?

I used a Moho Particle Emitter. Use Velocity to control how fast they trail from the emitter, Damping to slow them down after being emitted, and set the direction upward because bubbles float to the surface. To make them dissolve over life, set a keyframe for 0% Opacity for each bubble layer at their last frame (Lifetime setting.) Don't dissolve the shader as that won't work per particle; instead, it will have a global effect.

(Note: Bubbles don't actually dissolve like this, but I think it looks better. I use this dissolve trick even for 'realistic' bubble trails in feature film VFX.)

For a big monster, make more bubble variations, e.g., maybe more dense bubble clusters, a little more Damping to slow them down for scale. Maybe vary the dissolve end time for some layers to make it more interesting.

Here's the project if you want to check out the setup...

To see another variation, check out the Octopuss! project file on our Ko-fi page. These particles simulate bubble trails coming from the sea bottom.

Hi Greenlaw. That looks fantastic! But I was looking for a shot that showed the bubbles popping to the surface like this.....

Scene01Bubbles.mp4

Took a bit of thinking......
