How can I transfer/copy a rig to a new character

Post by Enfrize »

So, I did my first rig and was quite proud of it until I found out I want to separate hair strands on my character and move them all to different layers. So, I redrew it again, saved PSD, imported it again into Moho... only to find out I need to redo my rig from the beginning because it's now an entirely new character...

...or is there a way to somehow just copy my already existing rig onto that new character? It's still the same character with the same pose and all, and the rig should still be working just fine. I just need to move it onto it somehow...

Any help? :D

One of the tricks could be swapping the PSD"s

If the new character has the same structure as the existing one (number of bones, layers, names...), save the existing one in a new folder through the Gather media option, swap the PSD there with the new character's PSD and save it. Moho should do the rest.

If there are some inconsistencies among the PSD's, that part you'd have to sort out manually.

Well, there are more layers on the new character now, because like I said in original post, I separated all the hair strands so I can create bones for each one of them. Would that mess with the ability to copy the existing rig onto it?

"If there are some inconsistencies among the PSD's, that part you'd have to sort out manually."

If you only have a few additional layers/items to add - bind them accordingly (or add additional bones if required...) since the major part of the rig remains in proper shape.
The mess could occur if your characters differ in height, size or similar so when you replace/add new elements, some smart bones would need some TLC as well. Things like that.
Otherwise, if the characters are of similar build - it should work like a charm.

Could be just an etymology - you're not actually copying the rig to another one but replacing/adding parts to the existing one, in the new (Gathered media folder) file.
