How do i copy keyframes from mainline into a new action?

Well, I believe the subject says it all. I created a pretty funky run cycle in the mainline and now I wish I had made it as an action. I know, I know... some of you are going to just say "Just remake it as an action then!"

I'd like to know if this is doable though.. I realize this might happen again while animating where I find something that could work great as an action i wish to repeat with the character here and there so i'd really like to know. I tried highlighting all the keyframes in the mainline, then swapping to my action and trying to paste them.. doesnt work.
