How do I use frame by frame to animate procreate layers?

Wondering how to accomplish a certain animation task? Ask here.

How do I use frame by frame to animate procreate layers?

Post by willwillwill »

I have been doing frame by frame tutorials, and I am enjoying it very much. The issue is I usually draw most of my stuff in procreate. While the drawing gear with moho 13 is really much better than previous, it's still not as nice as procreate, no? So the question is, can I create layers in procreate, then I am guessing put a smart warm mesh over them (but am also open to suggestions there, especially if there's a hack that's easier than smart warp) and then animate the characters in frame by frame? I am sure there's a way to do that, I just can't work it out on my own so far. I am happy to be pointed in the direction of a tutorial, or if an explanation in a chat box is possible that would be wonderful too.
Thanks so much, mad huge respect to everyone on this forum.
Thanks.

I use Krita (not Procreate) but I'm guessing they're much the same. Here's an example that might answer your question about smart mesh.

Broadly, import as pngs and rig. No FBF.

The fungi opening is mesh warp; the ferns blowing are Wind (bones); there are particles for the "pollen" and the water ripples; and a blend mode darken for the initial "fade in".

If you were going for FBF from Procreate -- what I'd do (in Krita) is have the animated stuff in a group that can be imported as a Moho switch to overlay the static parts. Really just going back to the Hurd / Bray cel technique. e.g. https://youtu.be/7W2KItoS3Ww?t=191

About 7 years ago, I used Procreate to paint elements for the Hearts Like Fists title animation. Here's an example of one of the characters as painted in Procreate....

You can see the whole title sequence here...

HLF Title Animation

This is a pretty old example...in fact it was only my second 'Moho' project and it was created using Anime Studio 10. Custom Mesh Warping didn't exist back then and I relied on the auto-meshing Moho does by default. If you don't have Photoshop, you can open the PSD in Krita and use the 'equivalent' Save Layers As PNG command there. (I don't recall the exact name of the command but it's similar to what the PS script does, just with a lot fewer features.)

When drawing in Procreate for rigging, just save the file as a Layered PSD and it should work fine in Moho 13.5.4. For earlier versions, you might want to export the layers as PNGs. To do that, export as PSD and use the free Photoshop-Export-Layers-to-Files-Fast plugin.

BTW, with Moho 13.5.4, rigging and animating with images in Moho has become a whole lot easier/better with the new mesh warping options and the recently improved Layered PSD support.

I don't use Krita's FBF but I have used Photoshop for FBF for Moho on occasion, and I'm sure you can do the same with Krita. Save your animation as a PNG image sequence and import that to Moho as an Image Sequence.

Hope this helps.
