iPod casting and 3G - using Moho for content production

Post by Rhoel »

There has been much discussion about outputting to the new medias of iPod and 3G. The file formats and frames sizes are generally know but what are peoples experiences with using Moho for producing content.

The principal area I am interested in is the refresh rates - how fast can you play a video file in practice. Some reports suggest frames rates of only 8fps.

Some suggest mp4 and mulitple layers with the vectored background kept on a separate layer. Moho looks like the perfect tool for making content so discussion will be good.

However, since I have neither iPod or 3G mobile, testing this stuff at a practical level is out.

Just wondered if there is anyone else experimenting with this or trying to develope material.

Hi Rhoel. I'm experimenting with creating animations for mobiles and Moho is fantastic. I'm no expert on the matter but the quality of my animations are superb (better than anything I had downloaded).
I've exported my Moho animations using Quicktime .mov's under the animation compression. Then in an editing software also exporting the final product as quicktime/animation.
Then to open it in qicktime pro and exporting that as a 3Gpp file. Video format MPEG-4, Data Rate 240kb Image size 176X144 QCIF 15 Frames per second.
Works a treat, hope thats useful?

Why does rendering take so long?

Very useful - I had tested a 25fps scene using Nokia's avi convertor and found some very weird artifacts. These disappeared if I animated at 12 fps but the jerky motion wasn't so good (especially after testing 720p50  ).

Line quality is definately better than other output I had tested - Moho's variable line helps, though you have to do some testing to get the line right. Setting the Moho camera to 320*240 or whatever your target 3gp video format size is (Spence = 177*144), helps as you can direct render to see if the line corrupts.

LM might want to look at adding mpeg-4 as a new output format: Having mpeg-2 is also desirable as this is the native format for Blu-ray/HDDVD/HDTV.

As 3G becomes more popular as a distribution format, Lost Marbles webmaster might want to have a separate folder for 3G/new media related topics.
