Switch Layers and Muppet Head Trick

How did this guy use switch layers? I've been trying but nothing happens and when it does it looks terrible for me, the stroke line disappears when I click rendering.

go in the masking settings and click exclude strokes.... so the line won't disappear

Well thank you but it was just a rendering issue, I'm more focused on the switched layers, but thank you again!

If you're wanting to use interpolated switch layers in a masked head turn, I assume you'll need something like this:
