Weird edges when using Masking Layers

Post by JoelMayer »

Hi there...

Sorry for the not quite PG-Image, but to add even more embarassment on my part, i'm having trouble in the Characters Chest area: I'm using masking layers where i exclude the stroke and shade with a separate layer on top of that. For some reason, sometimes it gives me these white edges even in the render... Any help is much appreciated :)

What I do is increase the size of the mask by 1 or two pixels, or increase line width on the mask.
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?

Thanks for your suggestion, it unfortunately didn't help. I tried increasing the Mask by a Pixel but it didn't help either. The problem is, that the Breasts are basically a Circle with hidden Edges on them. If i would thicken the lines there again it would look very weird.

I attached a picture of my Anime Studio Workspace for better understanding.

Easiest fix:

Uncheck exclude stroke
Reference the layer adding to the mask and place this above the shadow layer
Disable the stroke on the original layer and disable the fill on the reference

That seems to have done the trick, thanks!

I must say, even though this method worked, it is really not very practical. For example, when i shade the Hands this way, but want to do a Switch Layer with them i wouldn't even know how to organize the endless layers.

I looked at some of the example files by Victor Paredes and his shading method was exactly the same as the one i tried here. I just don't understand why it wouldn't work, since i didn't do anything differently...

He probably doesn't use exclude strokes. That alone solves the problem, but may not be the result you're looking for.

He also seems to use strokes the same color as the fill instead of hiding edges. Is there a specific example of his you're talking about?

I think you're right, in the new examples with Pro 11, most of the Characters don't have Outlines.
