I have been given to understand that quality cartoon animation requires a good silhouette (per Groening and others) and have been trying to find a 'quick and dirty' way to see same without a lot of bother...
Try this method:
1) duplicate your character layer (or group layer) with the '+' sign
2) in that duplicate layer set your 'layer blending mode' to 'difference'
3) render it on screen or as a video... surprised? (I was)
comments? better methods?
Simply delete the duplicate layer after checking silhouette qualities.

Use masking..... it's in the manual
