How to make an animation of someone typing?

When you type, the letters come as you hit the keyboard. But i want that put into animation, as in, seeing words type out, in the animation. I tryed taking white cubes that match the background, and putting them on each letter, and then making them invisible one by one, so it looks right. But it would take too long. Know an easier way? Hope you understand what im talking about.

Take a look at this example. It consists of a background layer, a text layer, and a mask layer. It's very simple, just move the mask shape to reveal each letter. The key is to set the interpolation to step so the reveal is sharp like a type writer. This example was done in ASD8.
