MugoUrth's animations.
Normally I would pre-head my topic with words like "Novice" or "Beginner" but usually when I do that, I get no comments what-so-ever. But what I look for isn't praise, more or less I look for criticism.
The first animation I submitted online is here: http://mugourth.deviantart.com/#/d4soxc1
The character shown is named Salobal Aysalg, a creature who has the power of Yin, which allows him to control darkness and cold. His power is rather average compared to the villains of the cartoon, however. His best friend, as well as his wife, is the polar opposite, having the power of Yang which gives her control over light and heat.
In this animation, Salobal has incased himself in ice and is breaking free from the ice in sort of a show-offy move. My main problem with the animation is the body doesn't match with the rest of the character, and his arms are too small compared to his legs. These are things I should probably fix soon. Any other criticism though?

The arms and legs is segmented, and there are 3 ways to make the body joint seamless. One is to have all the joints connect and use a fan bone joint, and the other is keep it like it is and cover it with a patch. But can't use patch layer in debut so you would do it manually. make the patch smaller than the joint and cover the joining segment. The last way that I suggested was put the arm layers under the torso, then you would only need to use the "hide edge" line tool at the joining joint on the torso.
As for the look of the character, I consider it stylize just fine. No fast rules on a fictional character that I would apply design to it. Great imagination!

I'm not sure how to use the Hide Edge tool. No matter where I click, it doesn't seem to do anything. ...It's probably one of those things you can only see in preview. Also, I tried what you said with putting the arm layers under the torso, but... I'm not sure how that made it look better. It just removed his arms from view.ruscular3d wrote:The arms and legs is segmented, and there are 3 ways to make the body joint seamless. Also, thanks for the nice word. I think, character wise, I should try to flesh it out more. Give him more back-story, personality traits, character flaws, that sort of thing.

Following ruscular3d suggestion, take a look at this thread to get an understanding of the mandcon rig: arm bending
The mandcon rig is typically used for elbows, but it can be quite versatile for any joint. Here's one way to apply it:

Here's the anme files for you to examine (v.8.2 pro, I think Debut can open these): creatyre.zip
There are 3 files:
1. Creatyre_oneLayer_v8.anme -- Body parts on one layer
Note the use of point binding and how the joint points are bound to the "fan" (control) bones.
2. Creatyre_multiLayer_v8.anme -- Body parts on multiple layers (shown above)
The single layer is duplicated and shapes are deleted depending on the body part required. The advantage of this is that you can now animate shape order.
3. Creatyre_Animate_v8.anme -- A simple walk using animated shape order, like so:

Just another method to keep in your bag-o-tricks.

Thanks for the advice. I really like criticism. I make drawings on deviant art, and it kind of saddens me that no one comments or gives me ways to improve. Some may say how much my art sucks, or how much they like a certain character I drew (Usually a Pokemon or something), but the comments I relish the most are the ones that come bundled with criticism and ways I can improve. Yes, I do have a set style, but improving is still something I look to do.
This is the first animation I've ever done: http://mugourth.deviantart.com/#/d4uaw1c
I don't need people to tell me how I can improve here though. I already know the character's kind of stiff because only his arm and leg (and nose) move, making the character look more statuesque. Still practicing combining the entire body into one bone, as my first few attempts to combine the boy just warps the image.

My grandmother got laugh at and put down when she first started painting with oil. She stuck with it and would babysit me with a brush in my hand and we do it together. She had skin like teflon and just kept at it and eventually got good enough to teach in community college. She was known to teach others with little skills, using her tricks and lessen to get better at it.
Learning how to do the animation requires a good setup first. I see many style of setup on character from using patch layer or layering basic shape and/or sometimes using mask layer when designing the character.
Great explanation and example Mr Neeters!

I've been practicing a little, but I still don't have a good grasp on the hide line tool.
I have an animation of my main villain, Kazek the baku that sports a few animation techniques: A tail Swishing about, his trunk Dangling in front of his shirt, and a Rotating hypnotic emblem on said shirt, as well as a magic animation working with switches, but I haven't uploaded it to Deviant Art yet.
Right now I'm also working with resizing, as I am trying to make an animation based on Benny's first appearance where he is seen awaking from his home, a small cramped dumpster in an alley next to a vacant house.

Ugh, SERIOUS artists block right now. I have almost no motivation to use the program anymore. All I can show is old work I haven't show yet right now.

This is one of the main antagonists of Benny's cartoon: Kazek the Baku. Part elephant, part lion, part dwarf, all evil. He's... not particularly fleshed out, yet. I need to make him more multi-dimensional, but I'm unsure how to go with it. Right now, he's just one of those "Evil for the sake of evil," type characters.
