Which style is becoming more popular?
hmm
seems like the style lately is super smooth animation
atleast it looks like alot of things are using something like AS with bones and what not
maybe its just the artist
but I find theres a big visual difference between stuff in FBF vs some of the tween/bone things
Is it just that the styles are changing or is bone/tween quicker and easier to do and more monetarily and temporally expedient to do vs FBF stuff?

You can't answer this in general. It all depends on design, the kind of story told, and the style of animation you want to do (which should be a conscious decision, not just dictated by the kind of software you use).
I have a clear vision of how my animation should look like. Then I divide the task betwen TVPaint and AS, doing one part FBF, another part with bones (or even just layers) in AS, sometimes all within the same scene, even within the same character. Often I create FBF parts in TVP, and import it as Quicktime video into AS to combine it with images layers to make a full character.
