Have you come up with a good Moho trick? Need help solving an animation problem? Come on in.

Gradient on frame 0 doesn't translate to frame 1

Post by Sc0tt »

Hi,
I'm trying to add a gradient to a new character that I'm building. It displays nicely on frame 0 as I build him, but becomes very blocky as soon as I go to frame 1 on the timeline. I have a couple frame grabs, but I'm not sure how to post them here. Any pointers?

Don't know what you mean by blocky, but sounds like a display issue. Do a preview render and if it's still blocky then show the screen shot, if not check your display quality settings, but at least you know the final output will be fine. Search internet for 'free image hosting' to upload your pics. They will supply a code to use in forums, which you just copy\paste into your message.

Sorry about the terminology. I'm sure there is a better phrase for it. By blocky I mean that the nice tonal range (dark to light) I was hoping to get inside the body parts translates to half dark and half light, with the the two colours meeting in the middle. The exported QT is blocky as well.
Hopefully these images upload.

if you go to the layer with the gradient on it, and click on the select shape tool, handles will appear on the shapes. Grabbing the handles will allow you to manipulate the gradient and allow you to soften that hard edge. I think that maybe the radial gradient would be better here.

Check out the above thread - a similar problems seems to be occurring. Think it has something to do with bones, but I didn't read all posts. There is a solution, so read through it.

Thanks for the link. I didn't realize that 'bone influence' could affect the gradient. Still learning something new every day. Much appreciated.

gradient issue

Post by chrischristie »

I was having a sort of similar problem with all my gradients disappearing when timeline was in motion. After talking to the AS tech support I learned that it will not display gradients when viewing the timeline in motion (to save computer resources.) They will appear normally when the animation is exported.

The gradient not displaying whilst playing the animation is an expected result as it was programmed to perform this way. The original poster's problem, however, is a bug. It should be expected that the gradients look the same on frame one as in frame zero. And especially so when rendered.
