Aside from the a tad sugary message, this short is remarkable for its 3D/2D style (can't really make out what they used), with very fluid motions and blubbery squash & stretch, and for the treatment of lines and shadows. Have a close look at these: it's a combination of coloured outlines, halos outside, and defined shadows inside, which make for a very smooth appearance.

Very good animation, thank you slowtiger.
I'm almost sure the characters were made on AS, what do you think?

It could be, but I doubt it. The studio's site lists some 3D work as well, so I suppose they use the tool they know best.
But they certainly made it look very much 2,5D - just watch the way the characters turn (you can download the QT from nofatclips to study frame by frame, http://dekku.nofatclips.com/2010/08/dan ... meter.html).

But the limited turning heads, the line widths, the secondary motion (in a very dynamics bones way) and the overall character animation looks very like AS. My bet is they use AS for the characters and other softwares for 3d and final composition.slowtiger wrote:It could be, but I doubt it. Very nice anim!
despite the line work looking very 2D there's a lot of very obviously 3D stuff going on, so maybe they've discovered some 3D plugin that actually does a good job of exporting 2D??
---
i've just found a post from one of the animators over on cgtalk who says:
"Simply using mental ray contour lines. There really isn't any fancy thick to thin lines... simple, clean and graphical" - so it's maya
post here (although no more info than what i just posted above)

Great animation, love the style.
What makes me think it is actually 2d is that they render the characters only from the side, no turn around of any kind, which would be easy with a 3d application, but then again, might be what they we<re looking for.
Lightwave also has a very decent 2d shader.
3DSMax also has some pretty good 2d shader, cartoonreyes and illustrate comes to mind.

This one was rendered with Illustrate, a plug-in for Max and Maya.

That Integral software he's working on sounds interesting...GCharb wrote: http://www.davidgould.com
