Volunteer Animators Wanted For Proof-Of-Concept Animation
Greetings, everyone. I'm currently recruiting animators for a roughly 3-4 minute long prologue piece to serve as a proof-of-concept based on a published comic, which we hope to pitch to a studio to get produced as an animated short series.
Koden Shinsou no Izou
Story:
The story follows the exploits of 4 warriors commissioned to look for a legendary sword, said to have the power to give whoever wields it the strength to bring down dynasties. However, this sword had a previous owner, simply known as the Legendary Samurai, who is said to be looking for it as well. Thus, our 'heroes' must beat the Samurai to his sword, wherever it may be, all while trying to ward off fellow warriors and samurai trying to get to the sword first.
-------
I am in consistent contact with the creator of the comic, and his full work can be found in Star Cross Studio's ( http://www.joespicer2001.com/ ) indie comic anthology Propaganda Press Volume 2.
Other examples of his work can be seen here: ( http://roninsultramix.deviantart.com/ ), including the prologue piece that we're looking to animate.
We're looking for a smooth, soft style, and picture references and scripts will be provided as well to allow maximum efficiency in getting lip syncing and anatomy right.
As stated in the title, this is a volunteer job, so there will be no imminent payment, though should we successfully pitch the concept, we would of course hire those that helped with the concept animation straightaway.
Thank you for your time.

Well the first think i can say is that the story seems to be good and the comic and drawings are great, they look very professional.
I just wonder how are you going to get animators to work for free for a professional work like this?
I mean the problem here is the payment, for example in my case i would be willing to work for free if the animation to make is simple but this look like a vey complex task.
Just imagine to animate the characters with such a complex desing.
It would be hard to do and for that i think payment is needed.
Anyway Great comic!

I have look at the art work and I willing to help, and I mean help. If you can get the art work with out the balloons, otherwise I'm going to take twice as long and have the voice work done, plus you will edit the movie.
That mean that you will need a internet workspace where we can transfer files.
Here is about 3 hours of work. It 3 seconds of animation. That about how long it's going to take. One hour of my time per second. 3 minutes is 180 hours. You not going to find very many animators, if any. Sorry but that just the way it is. If you are willing and go buy AS, Photoshop and learn them, you can cut that time down. I can put in about 8 to 16 hours a week in between my job and school, so it going to take at least 12 weeks or more.
If your not ProminenceFlare please don't download. '10 max downloads' until he responds.

I'm doing this for myself because I could use this as a part of a show reel

I'm lacking the funds to get Anime Studio or Photoshop at the moment, but perhaps a way can be worked out to trim down the length of the video, maybe by a minute and change.
Edit: Also, everything else you mentioned is fine. Wordless pieces, all that- done. Of course, I'm hoping you won't be the only one to respond.

You need to get the voice work done unless you want a silent film. I will need to know how long each cut will be. Also editing software? Please don't say Movie Maker.
You can use gimp for photoshop and help doing some of the work. I will show you what I need. Did you download the clip? One of the problems is that changing a Magna to Anime the aspect ratio is way off. Their will be a lot of cropping and panning.
I meed to know what size to make the animation. Have the raw art work and have a place where you and I can post files back and forth.

I hope that anyone who "volunteers" for a project like this with vague promises of riches down the road someday get a solid contract with specific percentages of profit if the project is successful.
I know from experience EXACTLY what happens if you do "spec" work without a solid contract. You can get royally screwed. I made that mistake once with a huge web/marketing project from someone who PROMISED a guaranteed contract. After the pitch was finished the client signed with another company because we had no contract. If all you have is a verbal promise or even the words in this forum there is no obligation to give you anything.
Even a "volunteer" speculative project absolutely needs the exact same type of contractual guarantees that a PAID project would have. There is no difference. A "deferred" payment is a payment regardless. Otherwise you have NOTHING even if it is a huge success.
To anyone else who proposes projects like this, keep this in mind. Promises of payment after a successful pitch MUST TO BE IN WRITING.

Heyvern, I think this is dead in the water. Prominence some how got the idea in his head that a lot animators would jump on this and he would just sit back and watch it done for himself.
I was will to pony up around 180 hours of my time and he would have to do all the rest. I figure it's about another 180. This could be a quality project, but it doesn't happen overnight. I find that those who don't do animation, professionally or like me as a hobby have no clue how time consuming it can be.

Sorry, things have been hectic. It's not dead, I've just had to split my time between several problems lately- one in particular being my cousin's hospitalization due to a car accident. (As excuse-y as that sounds.) I DO have the wordless comics, however- I CAN get them to you later today, as the computer I'm on isn't my own, but I'll have some free time later to pop home and fire them off to you.
Again, a thousand apologies- it WON'T happen again.

That's fine. My advice still stands though. If you do it "for fun" that's okay, but if you hope to be included in any success make sure you have a signed contract stating EXACTLY what you expect to receive. Good intentions now can vanish instantly when money is involved.dueyftw wrote:Heyvern, I think this is dead in the water. Heyvern,
Your right as almost always. This project will never get done if there was any money at the start. The completed animation is worth the loss of my time, just to have it for part of a show reel. One fished work get more respect than 10 incompetent animations.
Prominence,
You gotten off on a bad start with me. A quick note to my email saying "I'm having personal problems right now, will get back to you in a few days." does wonders in this type of project.
You need to contact me and let me know what is going on. I can start with out the voice work but your going to have to get it done asap.
