BVH Import in AS Pro

Post by patricia3d »

There should an option for BVH import in Anime Studio Pro in the next version. As you see in Blender, when import a BVH, it automatically create bones and animation. IF that could be implemented here, it would be so nice.

Fat chance, excusez-moi le mot. Anime Studio is 2.5 D animation software, and will never become 3 D animation software, which would be necessary to convert the mocap data into animation data.

BTW Read this posting by Lost Marble.

Yes, I have tons of BVH files (among other motion capture formats) and can't see any possible way they would be useful in AS.

To further muddy the waters (or perhaps clarify them :>) you don't WANT 3D motion in AS anyway. What you want is the ILLUSION of such motion. Actual 3D motion would be pointless and not look right anyway. Because I've worked for so many years in 3D this is still a change I'm trying to get used to, but once you "get it" it's actually quite liberating (because you can get away with things in 2D you could never do in 3D).

That probably means I would have to take those figure drawing classes, instead of depending on mocap to do the work for me. And, of course, be inventive about how to move my characters in pseudo 3D.

Rasheed,

Someone (can't remember his name right now, but he was new to AS and very helpful with tutorials and all -- however, he seems to have vanished from this site in the last month or two) brought up a useful technique that is similar to mocap -- using a video background to "trace" (actually move bones to follow) a character's movements.

I've done this with some cartoon animation -- loaded in an AVI of a character running and then moved my character's bones accordingly -- and it's a useful technique to learn from. It's somewhat akin to the old "rotoscope" techniques where they used to take live action footage and draw over it (you can see this in the animated Lord of the Rings movie).

Ultimately you'll find it's much better (and actually easier) to just learn how to position the bones yourself for your walks, but as I said it at least is a valuable way to learn some difficult moves that aren't intuitive (sometimes I'll load in an AVI just to sort of study the movement while I mimic it to some degree -- not exactly a tracing but a definite guide).
