Fly Character

Post by Uolter »

Hello all, sorry i didn't reply to any message these times but I'm very busy at work, anyway the free time i have is spent on this new character I'm working on. It's a seriuos project and I'm collaborating with other people, that's why I want to achieve the better result possible. I created this character with 8 switch layer, every bone layer contains a head switch layer with the different angles. The semplicity of shapes make possible to create blend morphs quite easily and I'm very excited of this. I'm quite happy with the result now but I have to work yet on details. For animation needs I had to change a few things between the different views. I'm not very happy with the 3/4 back view, especially because to keep the nose backward I had to put the head back while in the other views isn't so.

Please let me know what you think about it, any suggestion is welcome!

Hello Volter

Nice character, I love the details.

About the head turn, it is a bit static, tried a bit of layer and point animation on it, a bit like this?

This has only one head picture, still looks smooth.

Great looking character! I have some small suggestions.

It looks like his face is flatter in the 3/4 view, but in the side view, it looks rounder. I think it would look great if you added some more curvature to the 3/4 view as though the eyes were wrapped around/painted onto a ball.

The wings overlap differently in the back 3/4 and the back view. The same wing should always be on top to make body turns consistent.

If you're going to animate body turns, you might move the furry spots on his chest because right now, it looks like his chest is not rotating with the rest of his body.

The design is really nice, I bet it will be a fun character to animate! :D

Gcharb: Thanks! Yes I know the head turn is static, it's made only with switch layers, but I've already planned to use blend morphs to get a smoother effect...

Iwaxana: thanks Iwa and thanks for your suggestions especially for the first one, I will try your solution...about the others, those are the details i still have to adjust, but I'm very happy with this character and I wasn't be to wait :) Yeah animation will be very challenging, but I know if i work hard I can achieve beautiful things!

As lwaxana pointed out about the body, my eye focused on the upper thorax and it looked like the rest of the fly rotated around it; simple fix and I look forward to more from you!!!
Sorry for bad animation

I love the character - he makes me smile immediately :D

He reminds me of Swat the Fly from one of my favourite films 'Hoppity (aka Mr Bug) Goes To Town'. Not the best animated film ever made I know but I adore that film :D

Can't wait to see your character fully animated.

Thanks sbtamu, I'm going to fix that...I can't wait to animate him, but I have to wait, I have to work on storyboard

Amigaman: thanks, I really looked a lot at your tutorial to make this character...I don't know the film you're talking about but now I think I must see it :)
