Mackell Test

Post by neomarz1 »

Doing A Character Screen test for Mackell.

Here is the Question...
A) Which voice best suits Mackell, High or Low Pitch?
B) Does the Accent work for the character?
C) Finally, Do any of the pitch samples sound too similar to Eve?

By the way im not asking for a animation critique, this is just a rough screen test.

A) I like the high pitched version, but not necessarily because of the pitch. There is a lot more inflection and pitch change in the speaking style. And that is a sure sign of evil. Just teasing. ;D But it does make her feel more flip and less steady/disciplined -- someone who has a lot of emotion just under the surface. Also helps to differentiate from Eve.

B) To me, the Eastern European sounding accent on the villain (I'm assuming she's the villain) feels like an 80s dynamic. I have watched some old McGyver episodes recently and everything in that series occurs within the context of the cold war. Aside from the Russians who wanted to leave Russia, all the Russians were villains and all the heroes were Americans. So if you have a similar dynamic of accents, people might subconsciously connect this to the cold war. I would personally prefer an American accent just to remove that interpretation. But maybe that's part of what you're going for.

C) I don't think Mackell sounds too similar to Eve. Eve's accent and pitch remind me of two things: National Public Radio, and Worf, son of Mog. ;D These Mackell tests convey a completely different personality. More like a member of the Romulan Tal Shiar or the female Zoisite from the English dubs of Sailor Moon.

Well, growing up in the 80's might be an influence here  No, I am just looking to put an international feel to the conflicts. Plus, I really loved the movie "Enemy at the Gates". Originally I thought about a German accent, but that has definately been used to convey the villian in probably about a zillion movies. I originally didnt like the low pitch, but I'm growing towards it. Still want to hear everyones opinion. The key factor is that "yes, she is the villian, and very militant. Dont think the American accent will be a consideration. Simply because I like what "Laura Post" Does, and I want to keep her connected to the three main female characters. The variety allows me to use her in this way.

Keep Voting.

I like the higher pitch also and there is also enough distinction between the two characters. If you feel the Russian or German voices over used there is always an American accent evil voice like Cruella Deville (Glenn close) which is probably too strong or Catwoman (Eartha Kit) which is slow and sexy but still sounds like the villain.
Sorry for bad animation

I like the Catwoman suggestion. I may use that for "Leaf", another character thats in the pipeline. That would certainly work for her. Thanks for the suggestion.
