Sitting in a Chair

Post by lwaxana »

Hi all,
I noticed that a lot of the animations posted in the share your work section involve characters sitting in chairs. So I thought someone may have some insights for me. I'm having a lot of trouble getting my characters to look like they're actually seated in chairs. Has anyone tried to make a specific "sitting in a chair" rig? Or do you just manage to position all the bones and points to be just right?

Most of us use the well-known "sitting in a chair"-script.

Seriously: draw your character on paper in its sitting position, then adjust in AS. You may find that your rig needs some tweaking to have the joints at the right places, or you may even change the layout because you find the legs are too short ot something like that. Maybe your character's torso doesn't have enough points so it doesn't bend - that's necessary in wsitting.

Any decent book about drawing cartoons may be helpful.

lol yeah, I guess it's a silly question.

My thought was that it would be easier to start with fresh vector art drawn in the correct position and re-rig it. My current rig isn't very suited to this situation. For example, I'll have a table top that will need to be higher than the torso layer, but lower than the arm layer. And right now my arms are fully integrated into the torso.

But you're absolutely right. I need to start by drawing it out on paper and then worry about the rigging.

Thanks for the tips!
