Series I'm working on
I got the voice actors, I got the theme song, but I will change the the opening sequence background scenes as they have too many fight scenes in them. I used those scenes since that was all the scenes I had done at the time and if you notice one scene is not even finished yet. And that is just a working title, I intend to change that too. I also changed the style of the characters. I will post here again when I will re do it in AS.

Wow, this looks like a cool project! I love the orange skunk dancing/spraying(?) at the top. And the fight animation is well done.
I don't know if you're looking for a critique, but in case it's useful, here goes! I had a hard time seeing some of the animation. Some of the clips were very short and in a few places the rectangles were overlapping the characters a lot. I think that paring down and going for clarity would give it more of a graphic punch.
You could even use a smaller frame to contain the character animation (sorry, I don't know what this is called, but they use it a lot in Samurai Jack) while the graphic animation and credits show outside of the frame. This may not be right for your project, but just an idea.

I Dont know... I like the rectangles, it adds character to your opening. I also like the female character. I dont know if your familiar with "Dirty Pair", but it sort of reminds me of the way alot of their openings went. I think you should throw in some weapon stuff. Have her pumping out some shots, or maybe uppercutting a guy to the chin, while knocking a gun out of his hand. Another thing that looks good is using "Stepping" in your fight sequences. Thats where you use very few inbetweens, and set up a rythym for fights. Like have a anticipation pose, then have it pop to a strike. They used this alot in "Dirty Pair", I used a little of this in my recent "In the beginning" scene I posted on my channel for youtube. (Its the very end of the sword fight, that scrolls by). Let me find something on youtube, and Ill post it here. Great work, cant wait to see more.
O.k. Here is what I found that might help out.
Look at the last sword fight in this video. THis will show the "Stepping" and rythym I was talking about. Ignore the fact its a sword fight, the key thing here is Anticipation, then action. Anticipation can be a slow animation at first, then popping into your strike. In Dirty Pair they used it alot in fight scenes. Alot of animators back then didnt care too much for it cuz they felt animation was best with more frames. In anime its been used alot, because it sells the action. Even in live action films its used alot. You may know all this already, but I think it would be cool in your opening sequence.

This is a really good one for pacing, The music sucks but its a good illustration. Check out the video starting at 1:49 to the end. Its a really good example.

Not spraying, just getting into a defensive pose, when you see a skunk on its front paws it means business and it's your last warning before it resorts to spraying.
Not seeing all is intentional, I want you to not get everything, it gets you to want to watch the short as the scenes in the background will be in the short.

About stepping, in anime its been used often since it saves on tweening cost and much of anime are budget limited except for elaborate movie features. But I want to create as much as possible a style that is far from anime yet have as much appeal. If I can't succeed I might have to resort to using styles found in anime as a last resort.

Great. I think youll come up with something good. I wouldnt worry too much about about trying to avoid a certain style. Everyone is influenced by something. I tried to mimic certain artists for awhile, then decided to work on my own thing. You eventually develope something that you can call your own. I started doing work in highschool similar to Frank Frazzetta, Shroud, and Frank Miller. All these guys had their idols too. I eventually started to follow anime, and got comics published in the mid 90's. Well anyhow, I guess I got off subject here... I guess what I'm saying is that you got a fine piece of animation going. Cant wait to see more. Marzout!super8mm wrote:@lwaxana
