First Animations

Post by timbot »

Here are a couple of my first animation tests.

1. A new character with a walk cycle.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75aogFkHNSE

2. A very different style i may wish to pursue.

Any comments, positive or negative, will be appreciated.

I like the walk cycle. He is walking to the beat of the music.

Well done.

Paul.

Very nice character and walk cycle. The only bit I'd change is to pull the hairline around more with the head turn, but that's a fairly minor thing. It looks good as it is.

I'd be interested to know how you managed the chalk texture.

Thanks. I thought it would be more interesting/comical with the hair remaining in place, but I think I agree with you. I will try it with the hair following the head.

Chalk texture:

Shape setting
- 13 pixel width line without fill

Line Effect Settings
- Splotchy
- Magnatude: 100
- Scale: 5
- Monochrome: YES

Brush Settings
- First custom brush (next to the 'None Box')
- Align Brush with curve: NO
- Brush Jitter angle: 360
- Brush Spacing: 25%
- Minimize frame-to-frame randomness: YES

Thanks for sharing the chalk settings. For some reason, I'd rarely think of using a brush and effects together. Nice effect.

What program did you use to make the background on the walk cycle? I like how it does not look all cartoony.

It's a photo I took here in NYC. I used photoshop and NIK ColorFX to play with the colors and lighting a bit. I do like "cartoony" backgrounds, but I'm gonna try to do more like this.

Skate Cycle and 2.5D Buildings Changing Perspective

Post by timbot »

Here's another one. I changed the hair to follow the head. I was doing a Preston Blaire type strut, and the feet were sliding a bit. So, I put some wheels on his feet, and now he's skating. This is also a test of some 2.5D buildings using bones to change perspective. They're still sort of crude, but let me know what you think.

Very nice work. He doesn't really appear to be pushing of with his trailing foot though.

Thanks for the feedback. I think this one is a bit better.

And here is the same character, 100 feet high and jogging across the Manhattan Bridge.

Very nice Manhattan Bridge jog. I like that.

The skating still doesn't look right to me. There's no force propelling the motion forward. (Although you may not be going for that technical of a style) When I skate at the speed he seems to be going, only my trailing "push off" leg straightens with each "step". You might try googling up some reference videos.
