Bones Causing Distortions
I've been figuring out the bone thing for anime studio. and understand what all the things are used for, but when I put the bones onto my person, it started moving some of the other parts of the character. and I used different layers, and I still don't understand.
I'm a rookie animator, and am trying to get it right, slowly but surely

The thing you need to undestand with bones is that they use a range of influence to affect control points making your models, if one bone influence radius, say for an upperarm, overlap onto the torso, then the torso will move along with the arm.
You can adjust the radius using the bone strength tool, also, you could manually assign control points to specific bones, I suggest you have a closer look at the bones tutorial for further infos!

It's very important to know how the bones works, how you must set them up and so. If you set up bones for a human for an example, the bone you add for the torso is the best bone to have as "main-bone" or what it is now called.
Now, I feel my English is too bad to explain everything, but have a look at this bone construction video:

I myself watched that video when I learned how bones works, and it was really useful! (as you see in the video, when you add a new bone, it will be attached to the bone you have marked, very important to remember!)
Anyways, that's a good start to understand. If you later wanna animate other creatures, like a monster/alien with 8 legs and 2 heads (for an example), then you understand how the bones works and you will know how to set up the bones for that odd creature with a lot of body parts =P
(I myself like drawing and animating odd creatures!)
Also, make sure the origins are on the right places! It has happened me a lot of times that I have forgot to set the origins, so when I will animate some body parts just fly around
