Just curious: do you draw your images directly in AS using the pen tool? They seem to have that squiggle look going on which is what happens when you try to "draw" in AS. Not sure if it was an intended look or not- but I would suggest using the add points tool and work from a scanned-in sketch- especially if you are using a mouse.
When I first tried using AS (coming from previously using Flash) I tried drawing my characters using the pen tool. Unfortunately AS is not a good direct drawing program. It was hard for me to switch to using the add points tool to draw my characters (especially since I just bought a pressure sensitive tablet/pen) but you'll get much better results using carefully placed points, and then going back and adjusting the curvature where needed.
