It's probably something simple.. but I've been wondering how exactly to create shapes with a nice glossy sheen. I'm working on a black vehicle, but I don't want it to look matte black.

You'd probably create another shape on the same layer, or on another layer. That shape would be a white highlight, with a shape layer effect applied, like soften.
You could also create a new layer on top of the car layer and create a new shape(s) in the new layer for highlights, then in the layers box, double-click on the layer and apply a blur effect to the layer so the shapes are all soft. It'll make the car look glossy-like.
