bone Qs

Post by egendron »

Q #1 do connected bones (i.e. parent / child) need to be all in one layer or can they be separated (multiple bone layers) within the layer hierarchy?

Q #2 can you link multiple layers to one bone? I think you must be able to but am unsure.

Q #3 do bones affect the subsets of a GROUP FOLDER? or must bones be connected to each individual image/vector layer?

Q #4 when using bind points, must another form of bone be set up first (region?)

Q #5 cc bone strength, i believe that in order to use bind points, you must first turn this feature down to zero for each bone, is this true or false?

gonna try to "bone" my character now, will likely be back here posting in an hour or so to figure out what i did wrong. :-) got my fingers crossed though.
thank you!!

PS, this section of the tutorial is what freaked me out:

"Although this method does work for binding points to bones, we don't really recommend it unless you have a special need to bind specific points to specific bones. You may have noticed that the arm doesn't move so smoothly with manual point binding. This is because the points around the elbow only move with one bone or the other, and so stretch apart and get distorted. With automatic binding, on the other hand, the points around the elbow move under the influence of both bones, and so move more smoothly. "

manual seems to steer you twds simpler solutions/approaches. that was worrisome. was good to hear that folks on this site regularly use bind points or almost exclusively use bind pts.
I once invested blood, sweat and tears into cinema4d only to learn later in a How-to book that "cinema 4D is not really geared towards character animation." So, I had to bite the bullet, use my student discount, and switch to maya.

Child/parent bone hierarchies only exist on one bone layer. You can't connect bones on different layers.

You can bind more than one layer to one bone.

Bones do not effect layers or vectors inside a group layer inside a bone layer. Bones only effect layers and vectors directly under them, they can't reach down inside another group layer.

Bind points does not need anything to be "set up". You just follow the steps to bind points and that's it.

You DO NOT have to turn down bone strength to use point binding. You can "mix" point binding with flexible or region binding. for instance a bone could influence a bunch of points in a general area based on its strength, but you decide you need one point to be moved by a bone way over on the other side. You just bind that one point to the other bone. Everything else works as usual.

The developer of "Moho" or "Anime Studio" thought that point binding wasn't needed once he put in region and flexible binding. Without future knowledge no one can be sure how some features will be used.

ok so i should avoid those "group folders" if Im to use bind points, thats good to know. Its one of the places ive been hitting a wall.
here is the latest file. have done well up until his left shoulder and upper arm . i started his jacket layer with flexi-bind points and that worked well until i began mixing flexi-bind and bind points together.
check out how the shoulder/upper arm moves.
what do you think is happening there?
