Selection of bones and transformation

Post by rylleman »

My rigs often tend to get cluttered with a lot of bones which makes it hard to select and move bones.
It would be a great help if you could, after you've selected the bone you want to manipulate, use a modifier key like ctrl or alt with the transform tools to keep the current selected bone in selection. So if you happen to click above another bone AS doesn't select and move that bone but the one you previously selected.

Perhaps this can be done by modifying the existing tools with lua? Have to look into that...

I never thought of that. Use the modifier key to prevent other bones from getting selected. Problem is... there aren't a lot of modifier keys. Have to look into this. This could definately be scripted. So if you use the translate bone tool you just hold that key and you can drag from ANYWERE on the screen and the bone you previously selected STAYS SELECTED. Brilliant idea!

It still doesn't make it easier to select bones under other bones but it would help with modifying them.

I tried something similar while working on my bone grouping tool. I could hide sets of grouped bones but they would still get selected. I was trying to figure out how to ignore sets of bones but had no luck with it.

I think the alt-key isn't used by default by any bone modification tool.
It doesn't make it esier to select bones but when you finally select that hard to catch-bone you can animate it and not immediately select some other bone when you try.And you can always select the bone from the drop-down list.
