I urge you all to have a look at this project: http://making-of-french-roast.blogspot.com/, especially at the video clip in the middle of the page titled "rigging". Now that's what I call a rig!
The clip illustrates nicely what I expect from a userfriendly rig:
1. you select every part just by clicking on it (not by browsing through layers)
2. while moving, the three axis are indicated by differently coloured circles, completely with contrains
3. add-on: you can move the middle element of a bone chain without changing the positions of both ends
Of course this clip leaves out the hundreds of hours it needed to create that character. If 3D were just this, I'd try it. (Or keep a slave for rigging in the basement.)

Have you seen Burning Safari? There is a 'making of' documentary which shows some similarly nice rigging.
BTW, I would bet my bunch that you keep at least one slave in your basement Slo, maybe for purposes other than animation though?
