Moho 5.0.9 - Actions appear to be "broken"

Post by T »

(First: Love the program, love the program, love it, love it, love it)

However:

Downloaded update 5.0.9, and some or all existing actions no longer work "properly". This includes those from Tutorial 5.6

I tested the tutorial after discovering problems with a walk cycle that I had already made (that used to work smoothly). In my project and in 5.6 tute there is a "stutter" when several STEP actions are inserted by inference (I did not try by code) one after the other. The stutter occurs at the point where one ends and the next begins.

I have yet to create new walk cycles to see if new actions are fine or not.

I really hate it that my first post is a bug report.

I didn't include an example, because the problem can be observed just by following the 5.6 tutorial. If needed, I can provide my rough and ugly actions project (learning process only).

Update: Newly created walk cycle in same project

Post by T »

Just an update... created new simple walk cycle in my own project. Same stutter occurred. Have not created a new project to test yet, but I will.

This time I was going to provide example (as indicated in "Sticky post"), but I'm not sure how.

Update: Test w/ new project, new character, new walk action

Post by T »

Just an update (maybe I should have just edited my original, instead of replying, if so please let me know):

Created entirely new project, simple character, and walk action (similar to that in 5.6), and experienced same "stutter".

I think what we're seeing is not a bug in the program, but a bug in the tutorial. The "Step" action in the Tutorial 5.6 file is actually a pretty bad example of an action. If you switch to that action and play it back, you'll notice that the end of the action does not match the beginning. This makes it impossible to use the action over and over again without a "stutter" in the motion. Here's an improved version:

http://www.lostmarble.com/misc/Tutorial%205.6.moho

This improved version is still not that great. Because the character is starting from a standstill, there are two possible approaches to imrpove it further:

1. The step action should be an "in-motion step". What I mean is, it shouldn't try to start off from a stop, and then cycle in order to keep walking. The step action should appear as if the character was in the middle of walking. Then, the animator would need to manually add a couple keyframes to take the very first step from a standstill.

2. There could be two actions: "First Step" and "Step". The First Step action would be an animation of the very first step from a standstill, while the Step action would be what I called an "in-motion step" above. To use these actions, you would insert one First Step action, and then as many Step actions as you want in a row. You could also create a Last Step action to let the character come to a stop.

I don't know how all of this applies to your own walking action, but if you want to email it to support@lostmarble.com, I can take a look.

Thanks, I think you may be right... just have to rethink actions. But since I'm really just getting to know them, that's okay!

Long delay in my reply because I used MOHO with a small team in a 48 hour film competition sponsored several times a year by our local film festival (48 hours from concept to script to animation to render to DVD)...

I'll share our rough-hewn nonsense-clip on the forum after the screening Saturday night... we're in the top 15 films, in the running for first prize (or something not quite so first prize).

This would NOT be possible wihout MOHO!!! Je chanterai les éloges de Lost Marble!
