How do I save a character and put him in different movies?

Self explanatory title is self explanatory.
Copy and paste doesn't work and the character is already in a movie. I know I could save that movie under a different name and delete everything except the 0 frame, but is there a better way?

You create your characters and save them in their own .anime files, so you can load them seperately. ;)

But then what if I want to have multiple pre-made characters in a scene? Copy-and-paste doesn't seem to work when I try it, though it sounds like it should.

You don't copy and paste your characters, you load them via File>Import.

The project I worked with had several characters, all organized the same way: each character had its own file, in this was a group layer named with the character's name, in this were different views of the same character. Building a new scene started with importing all necessary characters via "import anime studio object".
