Have you come up with a good Moho trick? Need help solving an animation problem? Come on in.

point by point hall

Post by AlanPS »

I'm trying some cool perspective stuff with point-by-point switch layers. You could use this principal for buildings, boxes, etc.

What I'm attempting (and asking help for) is the look you get when you're in the middle of a hallway that extends in either direction. When you rotate to your left or right there's almost a fisheye effect that takes place (at least on the movies) which I can't accomplish at the moment.

Also I'm sure my perspective is totally incorrect but if someone tweaks this it will look really cool and I will submit it for anyone's use. It would also be cool if people run with this idea and we could start a library of hallways, buildings, etc. for public domain using this effect.

Some lines in the switch layers are also totally not needed but this is my first attempt.

It looks cool!
Regarding to technical questions:
There are three kind of perspectives drawings: one point, two points and three points.
All parallel lines will confluence in its corresponding vanishing point.
In your animation the vanishing point is not correct most or the time. That's the reason why it not seems true conic projection. During transformation between a layer and its partner inside the switch layer the parallel lines should converge to the vanishing point.
Maybe you better do it only with point potion and later try to achieve it by switch layers changes. Sometimes the interpolation done is not the desired one...

Check out conic perspective basics for more information.

Take a trip to the local library and have a look for books about M.C. Escher (some listed here: http://amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/105-36 ... .y=6&Go=Go). Especially the volume "The magic mirror of MCE" by Bruno Ernst has some construction grids which are useful for the kind of effect you described.

I tried to find some panoramic images from interiours on google, but the nearest I found was this: Image. You can already study the different perspective lines here: the room is a perfect rectangle.

I've been borrowing so much from everybody on the forum- it feels cool to contribute at least a potentially workable idea.

deck the halls with fisheye lenses- fa la la la la...

Got two new versions. I believe I've fixed the first perspective point, I just can't quite figure out the other.

To get the fisheye effect I added some points to the curve and scaled them up. Still totally incorrect scientifically but it looks a little better. Didn't know if some of the curves are supposed to be convex as opposed to concave (though at the moment I can't remember which is which).
