Ok, I found a nice resolution to display all of AS's windows (1152x864). Now it would be nice if the "actions" window would auto open at start-up and keep it's size. I don't think it keeps it size now because it's width is smaller then when it opens.
Now as for the 4:3 safe zone. I edit in 16:9 and when you check the "ntsc safe zones" option, it only displays the safe zones for 16:9. It would be nice for a 4:3 safe zone option when editing in 16:9.

For a couple of extra mouse clicks it provides that feature. You could add it to an empty start-up file in AS.

Only works at a certain resoulution. I have my project settings at 640x360 but I render at higher resolutions depending on what I need. I guess I could make my own though. Thanks for the link.
Its not a resolution problem. Just make sure the layer the guide is in, is set to immune to camera movements - if you then scale the scene to 640*360, the guide autoscales.
Making them is easy: Set the project to 4:3, turn on the safe areas then vector the action safe and camera aperature.
When you change the project settings to 16:9, the camera width is increased, not the vertical as some systems do. Once that is done, just add the transparent "wide creen" areas and save it all out.
I have a modified on for working with mobile content - its not 1:1.33 (4:3) but 1:1.25. (220* 176) - the east west safe area is a bit tighter, but still fine for 4:3. Since mobile content providers are keen to see new animation and you get royalites from it, it might be worth having the 1:25 showing.
It would be nice long term to see the default safe areas in Anime studio switchable from widescreen to 4:3 - but the self-made vector guides are a good work around: The guys at the studio here (as in the UK) have then guides loaded in ALL scenes.
If you work for broadcasters such as the BBC, the small print says you must used safe guides - the reason is on broadcast, the master is split in an ARC (Aspect ratio converter) - the unmodofied 16:9 goes to the difital satellite/cable feeds whilst the 4:3 goes to analogue. There is no time for pan and scan. Plug and play is their only option.
