Simple animation using Flash 2.0

Post by Rasheed »

I was curious if Flash 2.0 is capable enough to draw simple animation. Here is my first attempt.

The birds were drawn in Flash, and the environment in Moho. I made six poses of the birds in Flash (paw back, paw fore, blink eye, beak open, flap wing, normal pose), exported as PICT, converted into PNG, removed white background, and switched those PNGs in Moho.

Here is the source file: threebirdies.zip

I'm impressed that even very limited animation can still give a bit of the illusion of life.

The next stage will be to create a script and storyboard to give these birdies something entertaining to do.

If you put the parts of a character into symbols, things get complicated pretty soon, especially since there are no layer groups in Flash 2.0. Well, I think I'll do the animation in Moho anyway.

Here's a birdie in a simple line test. The character was exported as exploded view from Flash and separated with an image editor into separated PNG images, which were imported into Moho. Moho then becomes dog slow.

Perhaps this is not the best way to do things.

orright, okay
I am a self confessed Ahole but
What year is this?
No seriously...
is this 1996 or 1997?
Flash 2 ????!!!!

Why do some people come here trying to reinvent the wheel?
Look at that piece of bird crap animation and the difficulty he went thru just to do it?

Are you mentally deranged?
Get with the times bro, that could have been done on AS better and quicker than you look like you can think
Take your stupid chicken and dont come back here again

And then theres that other guy that posts every drawing hes done on moho or AS, no animation just a picture. OOH wow youre very good picture guy.
You can go and not come back also!

I suppose next we'll see people animating on flip books, scanning each drawing in PShop and coloring. vectorizing in illustrator. importing into AS , doing backgrounds in flash exporting as an AVI and being put together in Moviemaker and compressed in something or other as a quicktime movie. Phew, Im sure you know what I mean

WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! Do something worthwhile or dont post
Just like me - Ive never posted a frame of anything because Ive got nothing worth while to say

Look at his next post
"Heres an idea I had for a drama"

Thats...thats...like a ground breaking cutting edge idea man. OOOHH I can wait to see what happens next. I am spoofing blood in anticipation
you are AN Effing IDIOT!

are you deadly serious?
Heres a good idea - my foot up your arse!

Wake up to yourself!
Now, good day to you sir!

@earhoney. Your response to this post was not helpful. This is a friendly forum for people of all skill levels. Rasheed is a valuable member of this community and has contributed quite a bit. I'm sure with your limited time on the forums you have missed his many helpful answers. Not sure if you just had a bad day - which happens to all of us at some point - but please refrain from the rudeness.

I was tempted to delete those posts... but I refrained due to a horrible free speech conviction I have.

This is border line though. It actually offended me more than Brittany Spears neked.

Rasheed, just say the word and they're gone.

This sort of thing is discouraging to anyone, not just its target. Who would want to post, for fear of getting a dressing down like this? I had thought this was a friendly forum, too.

mmm youre a gentleman Bupaje
a real gentleman
OK Im nobody, dont worry about me
Rasheed, your work is just great
your doing a great job and its good to have great input on the forum as yours

You know Im not really aggressive
I quite shy and self doubtful
Im surrounded by rude people in society who tell you exactly what they are thinking
These people are applauded for being "honest" and "at least you know where you stand with them"

For once I thought I would say what I am thinking
Ive seen some very exciting animation here on this forum
and Im not talking about perfect Disney style animation
That souless stuff makes me puke
I mean exciting stuff - one of my favourites on this forum is Zebulon

Again Im nobody we can all tell Rasheed his stuff is fun and good and say keep up the good work
but in reality its nothing
Hey, I believe you should take your limitations and make it your style
but Mr Rasheed has taken his style and made it his limitation.

Rasheed look aroumd you man that stuff is in no way exciting my brain or even attempting to tell a story

Wake up call to Rasheed!
your going backward with this stuff
Comon Ive seen your picture - your a grown man dont tell me your technique is anything but slow and cumbersome
I know what your up to...your getting caught up in technique - finding time wasting hard backward ways to do simple things and you are in fact a procrastinater by nature. Keep doing this and youll never produce anything. I know

so if you all want to tell him he is doing just great do be it
You will be doing him a disservice

As I said you may think Im just being lees than friendly and a real jerk
But Im trying to be honest

Who says he wants to tell a story? I can't speak for Rasheed, but some people just like to tinker, and have no intention of creating a full-fledged movie. Hobbyists, experimenters, people who just like to try things, and for them it's not a means to an end, it is the end itself. Some great innovations come about by people tinkering around and showing their results. Things that no one else would have thought to try, and then people see it and realise there's something else they could do with that same method. There is always value in experiment.

I like to think outside the box, at least, I'm trying to. I've seen some very compelling animation using old school game animation (Mario Bros and such). Going back to something that used to be cool and hip is not always the same as going backwards.

I have a problem with drawing. Using a polished software like AS is not going to improve my drawing skills, a program like Flash 2.0 might, because you don't have any special tools to help you "cheat your skill level".

Earhoney,

Criticism is fine and dandy.

I think each of us know where our strengths and weaknesses are.

Rasheed is MY hero because of a wicked cool script he created very quickly, that converts bone motion to point motion.

You can comment on his style or your perceived quality of his work. But there is no need to rip him apart the way you did. That isn't constructive criticism that is just being mean.

When you write things like that it creates an image in my mind of the type of person you are. I would be very disinclined to go out of my way to offer you any help or advice using AS because of that negative image... you do use AS right?

Rasheed has always been a gentle soul on this forum and has always been realistic about his skills in this area. and I will defend him to the death!

Besides, he's from the Netherlands! That's where Santa Clause came from! I think... or was it Germany... ;) I got some really great stuff this year.

p.s. Rasheed, Not to the death. I take that back. I would hold your coat if you got in a fight though. ;)

p.s.s. I write this with the delusion that earhoney is not some trash talking troll looking to get a rise out of people.

I'm sure that to my knowledge that the posts by earhoney are the first of what I would call a dressing down. This is not a University where we need to have an answer each time we go to class(forum). It is more like a social club with a common interest. As you can plainly see the members here respond like concerned friends, as they are!
You are still welcome earhoney as far as I'm concerned. (teaching for 30 years taught me how to ignore the insincere and attention seekers)
PS Just curious, how old are you?
You'll know when you get there! My Dad

Take your stupid chicken and dont come back here again
There's no way this guy is serious! If he lurks around here as he implies, he knows that bad-mouthing Rasheed is like giving the President the bird.

His comments were so over-the-top, it (almost) made me chuckle. It's like reading a letter from Don Rickles!

On the other hand Bro, we get it already; Rasheed doesn't need to set out a cupcake for you at his next Fan Club meeting.
