Are there several ways of drawing a character?

I have some problems to understand how to draw a character.
I thought I had to make a group with the different body's parts (and one special group for the head);
But I've just looked et tuto 3.4 (Set-up character) and at the beginning, there is one complete character, but no group.
So I've tried this : I made one vector layer for the head, drew it.
Then I made a second vector layer"right arm".
But now, impossible to fill with the pink color named "skin" in the style window and already used for the character's head.
How must I manage?
