Using Fonts in Moho 14 (Mac) - SOLVED

Post by dcr »

Hello,

At the risk of asking a stupid question, how do I (or can I?) get Moho to recognize fonts?

I'm using Moho 14.2 on a Mac running Sequoia (macOS 15) and using the Typeface app for font management.

The font I want to use, Montserrat, is OpenType, so it should be compatible with Moho. I have the font family activated, but only Montserrat Regular and Medium show up in Moho. Bold, ExtraBold and others are not available even though they are all activated in Typeface.

At first, I thought perhaps Moho and Typeface weren't compatible, but Montserrat is not installed in my system itself, so the only way Moho is finding Montserrat Regular and Medium is via the activation in Typeface.

It's not just an issue with Montserrat either. Most of the fonts I have installed (either in the system itself or activated in Typeface) don't show up in Moho. Most of my fonts are either OpenType or TrueType so they should be compatible.

Any ideas? Have I missed a step somewhere?

Thanks,
Dan

I tried updating to Moho 14.3 to see if it made a difference and it didn't.

Only a small number of system fonts actually show in Moho and very few of the fonts activated via Typeface show up. I can find no way of getting Montserrat Bold to show up. Normally, I'd see if I could get away with using a different font, but only three bold fonts show up in Moho. I'm stuck with regular/medium faces, so no way to bold specific words if I wanted to. Plus, of the fonts that do show up, I don't really like any of them so there's nothing that's a good substitute for Montserrat Bold.

On Windows, you have to install the fonts for all users. I'm not sure if there's a Mac equivalent.

Here's the only Mac-specific advice I've seen: https://www.lostmarble.net/forum/viewto ... 55#p187355

Thanks. I've been through that thread (and all the others I could find) to no avail.

Doesn't make sense. Montserrat Regular and Montserrat Medium show up and they are at the same level as Bold, Extra Bold, Italic and others that don't show up. All are OpenType as well so there shouldn't be any compatibility issues.

Also tried updating to the current version of Typeface and that made no difference either.

As another example, Poppins is not installed in my system. It is activated in Typeface. Poppins Regular, Medium and Semibold show up in Moho. Poppins Bold, ExtraBold and Black do not. All of those are activated in Typeface and they are all OpenType fonts which should be compatible with Moho.

Tried activating only the bold versions of other fonts, and they won't show up in Moho.

There appears to be no rhyme or reason for what fonts will show up in Moho. All I know is any font I would want to use is not available in Moho.

Tried on a different Mac that has Moho 14.0 installed. No go on it either. Couldn't even get any style of Montserrat to show up in Moho.

I'm on a Mac.

I installed a Google font, then turned Moho off and on and there it was in the list of fonts (must re-start Moho for Moho to see it).

What I did:

Downloaded a font to Downloads folder.
Opened the ZIP to produce a folder containing the font.
Opened Fontbook app.
File > Add Fonts to Current User
Choose the .ttf file in the folder and add it to the Fontbook. Your Mac may ask to verify.
Deleted the font in the Downloads folder - it's no longer needed.
Restart Moho.

Hope this helps.

Yes, it did help, in a roundabout way. Thanks!

This is what I did.

I opened FontBook. Montserrat showed up in the list but only 2 of 5 styles showed as activated. The two were Regular and Medium, the two that showed up in Moho. I could not see where to activate the other three. So, I had FontBook show me the font location in the Finder. That took me to:

Mac HD > Users > [username] > Library > Fonts

There I could see a handful of fonts, including Montserrat Regular and Medium. All the fonts in that folder were .ttf fonts.

I went to where I keep my fonts for Typeface and looked for Montserrat. I didn't have any .ttf versions. All were .otf. Anyway, I copied Montserrat Black, Bold and Black Italic to the Fonts folder listed above.

Then I restarted Moho and, voila!, there they are.

So, I guess any font I want to use in Moho, I just need to copy into that folder.

Thanks again! I had consigned myself to putting a stroke on Montserrat-Medium and adjusting until I had something kind of resembling Bold which wasn't ideal but it would have been much faster than having to do the type in another program and import. But this way, I can do it all in Moho.

Glad you got it working.

Sometimes when we're lost, all that's needed is for someone to point in a general direction and say "go that way, probably" and we figure it out.
