How To Properly Import AI or SVG Files Exported from Coreldraw With The Layers Intact

Post by vivekchakraverty »

Well, I'm back to my Moho 12.5 after quite some time, this time armed with many of the software products of and for the Corel Suite(thanks to Humble Bundle). I have outline traced a vector character in Coreldraw. However when i try to import it in both AI and SVG formats, I get a single layer as the whole illustration without it's constituent shapes and objects in Coreldraw Standard 2024. I tried the SVG importer Moho script but still the problem persists- no independent and separate layers. My skills in both Moho and Coreldraw are that of a beginner.

Its a problem peculiar to Moho as the imports worked fine on software like Photopea.

Use SimplSam's importer. It's the same one that was officially adopted for Moho 14.x. The one you can download from mohoscripts.com works with Moho 12.5.

That isn't working either. When I tick-off the combine adjacent layers in the SVG tool, Moho just freezes

If you can provide a sample problem SVG file, we can have a look see.

FWIW imports "ok" here -- Moho 14.2 -- BUT it seems to have the "edge" artefacts issue reported elsewhere

It imported OK in Moho 12.5 with the SVG Import add-on (default settings).

But ..

- The image is created for presentation and not animation
- There is no grouping (i.e. Leg, Arm, Head etc.)
- There are 650 individual shape elements - which get consolidated into a single Moho layer (default)
- Many of the elements are used to represent shading
- Those elements are patched together - creating the Edge Artefacts that Hayasidist has mentioned
- When simply moving/manipulating some of those elements (in Affinity) - the image representation breaks up as below:

Yes, as i said, i'm a beginner and i tried to outline trace a bitmap after importing the png illustration(done by a friend for the project). the issue im having is that the layers are merged when imported (the default option). But if i uncheck the option for not grouping vector layers nearby, moho 12.5 completely freezes. Should i slice the full layer into it's constituent parts by using lasso and manipulating the layers, as shown in this video:

That vector image is not a good match for Moho, whatever you try to do to it.

If you try to SVG import without grouping the vector layers - you would create 650 layers, which is not good.

You would be better trying to use the PNG, with cutout animation (after separating the body parts: you might need your friend's help), and Moho Bones / possibly Mesh warp.

Seeing the image, I agree with SimplSam. It might be better to break this apart as a bitmap image.

I would do this as a hybrid setup, making parts of the character pure image layer, and other parts vector layer with an Image Texture fill. For example, the bracers would look pretty cool if you painted the texture as a wide wraparound image and then moved it horizontally to make it 'turn'. This is a trick I use all the time, most notably in my earlier animations for DreamWorks.

My old Puss In Boots rig features this technique for pretty much every body part, including the head, torso, and tail: 'Puss In Boots Interactive' Demo (2018)

Hope this helps.
