Found a really cool bit of planning software, and at a price I like - its free.

The detailas are here: http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/in ... /Main_Page

I am using it to plan a long form film, to keep track of cahracters and their traits, who knows who, and for general story flow. It supports collapsable trees so you can have a sequence/scene heading, then hide/unhide details of what happens within that bit. Makes for easy viewing of the whole project.

It need Java to run, but that is easily available.

I can't recommend this highly enough. I use it for just jotting down ideas, and then dragging and dropping them around as I brainstorm and then organize ideas later. I also use it for organizing DVD menus and submenus. Makes it handy to drag and drop trees of submenus easily.

It's a great tool for outlining stories, and just about everything where you have content and you're not quite sure how you want to organize it yet... but you have ideas first and want to organize it later.

Update

I have just finished designing a 13 * 30 series - I used FreeMind to help track the Episode plots and actions, the principal characters and locations, plus all the Episodic Characters, locations and Props. Its amounted to thousands of separate detailed items which traditionally has been a nightmare to organize and distribute.

But FreeMind has made it mostly headache free. Being able to output the map as HTML is also a huge bonus - I can keep this on a intranet/internet do all the team-contributors can see the details fast. Now, I can go back to Episode 2, and find all the data relating to Mr Morrison, where he lived, his age, the relevant model sheet number, etc. As a production tool, it's fabulous.

If you have never played with it, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Holy COW!

I paid $100 + several years ago for an application that is exactly the same... same features... same look. I was going to have to buy an upgrade.

How can anyone compete with free?

If this keeps up there won't be any commercial software. ;)

Freemind is great. I've used it in a similar way to Rhoel for planning projects and animations, and a talk I had to give once. It really helps clarify your ideas. And I'm all for free software! Especially when it's this good.
