Issue with point of origin and shadow

Post by Mattyj »

Just having an issue with the point of origin tool not placing a shadow layer (colorised copy of character layer)a underneath the character. I am placing the point of origin at the characters feet, and the character goes through a walk cycle but the shadow's point of origin ends up in really weird and random places i.e. not under the character. It does follow the character, just not from where I am placing the point of origin for the layer.

First thing to check is that the character and shadow are at the same z-depth. You can check that visually with the orbit view tool.

Cheers Wes,

Yeah shadow layer is in the same position on the z axis.

Hmm, might have to see a file or some screenshots of the workspace and layers.

Are any smart bones involved? If so, you could have inadvertently animated something there.

Just unsure as how to upload screenshots as it looks like you have to bang in some [img] code, there might be a how to on this board?

To upload an image, you need to first upload it to an image hosting site or a personal cloud server like Dropbox or Google Drive. If you don't need a lot of space, the latter two offer free accounts. Once you have the link, you should be able to paste it into your post, select the link and click the Image button.

I use Dropbox which requires one extra step: After saving/copying the file to a folder in Dropbox, right-click on the file and choose Copy Dropbox Link. This works for both Dropbox on your desktop or at the website. Next, paste the link into your forum post. Here's the extra bit: at the end of the link, you'll see [dl=0]...change this to [raw=1]. Now select the link and click the Image button. That's it. :)

The nice thing about Dropbox is that you can update the file or move the file to a different folder in your account, and Dropbox will maintain the link in the forum post. (In other words, no more broken image links.)

There has to be layer translation keyframes somewhere. Likely in a smart bone action.

BTW, if you're using Dropbox, you need to follow the instructions in the second paragraph of my post to display the image in a post:

raw=1 displays the image; dl=0 is for downloading. Then select the link text and click the Image button.
