How to split a vector object into its own object?

Post by Alsmithee »

Example, I made the mistake of drawing both of a characters arms under one "arm" vector layer, which means they both move when I try to translate the layer itself. Is there a way to split one arm into its own vector layer? For example if I want to take the left arm and make it into "left arm" layer?

Use the "duplicate layer" button on the layer pallete. It is the tool with the "+" sign on it.

Duplicate the arm layer.

After doing this just delete the right arm from one layer and the left from the other. Change the names of the layers if you like too.

I use this technique for EVERYTHING. I draw everything (almost) on one layer... at some point the project starts to get "complicated" and I just duplicate layers and delete the duplicated elements from each layer.

Second related question, how do I get an object to "appear" out of thin air? What I've been doing for objects/characters I dont need throught the scene (in which they appear midway through) is have them off frame and then move them in place somewhere down the timeline. However Moho automatically "fills" the holes between point A and B meaning it will move it into place along a trajectory. So what if I want the object to appear out of nowhere?

Select that object's timeline, and for all the qualities you want to "suddenly appear, select "STEP" by right-clicking on a keyframe in the timeline.

EXAMPLE: If I wanted a rabbit to (instantly) appear out of a hat, I'd put all the rabbit components in a group layer. Make a keyframe for that group layer on frame 1, right-click on it and choose STEP from the pop-up mini-menu. Move to the spot on the timeline where you want the rabbit to appear, create a keyframe, and move the rabbit into shot. Voila! It should just pop up out of thin air.

A second way would be to use a switch layer.

Hope this helps,

J
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?

Or... you could use the "Visibility" check box at the top of the layer properties.

Double click the layer and in the properties there is a check box for visibilty. There is also a box for layer transparency value (0-100).

The visisibilty check box is "step" by default. It never interpolates. It is on or off.

The opacity value can be interpolated over time so layers can fade in and out.

I generally use the Visibilty for making things "appear suddenly".

This can also be used for duplicate items that must change layer ordering. For instance I have a character at a 3/4 view. the arm in the "back" comes up and over in front of the body during the animation. But it also needs to be behind the body when it is down... or at "rest" at the side of the body.

So I have two arm layers. By carefully setting the key frames of the top arm layer visibility I can make the arm appear to be infront or behind the character.
