PNG Sequence Quality/ frame rate export

Post by ExplodeCreative »

Are there any options to change the frame rate and/or quality of the PNG export? All I could find was a feature request for this from 2004.

File / Project Settings / Frame rate

If resolution is an issue, try a larger format (e.g. 4K) File / Project Settings / Dimensions

PNG is lossless compression, so no real disbenefit from a lack of compression options.

Exporter has options such as antialiasing etc -- what Moho can't yet do is handle larger colour depths.

The quality of a PNG is always the same (but some programs let you adjust the amount of compression). "Frame rate" makes no sense here, for each frame in Moho there's 1 PNG exported. Once you import that image sequence into a video editor, you may apply time adjustment on it.

In Moho Exporter, check that Extra-Smooth Images is enabled in your default for any final quality render settings. What this option does is it forces Moho to render internally at 2x the current resolution setting, and then scales the image down to the requested resolution, which results in noticeably better anti-aliasing for the overall image.

Be advised that this also means the output can take up to four times longer to complete but that the price for a quality render.

(TBH, if you plan out your output for efficient compositing, Moho is not at all slow when it comes to rendering.)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help. Maybe I'm spoilt coming from Spine 2D, which allows you to specify compression and framerate on a PNG sequence export. But it's meant for game engines really.

Side note: Spine also does compressed GIFs incredibly nicely - leagues better than AE, PS or Moho. I know most people here say GIFs are bad across the board, but Spine can export a really good looking looping GIF under 8mb perfect for Twitter or Discord. I have no clue what sort of wizardry is behind that. If Moho got on board with that I'd be a happy chap.

Creating small GIFs is no wizardry, it's mainly about the right content, then optimizing it. We used GIFbuilder at that time (in the 90's), and a GIF of 200k was deemed gigantic then. We had a rule: a webpage with all content (images included) must stay under 50k! 8 MB??? The format was not made for that, but the robustness still amazes.

Agreed! But I'm probably more amazed that people still use the format and like it. It's crude and ugly, but then again, I suppose that's all part of the format's 'retro' appeal.

I'm kidding of course. I like to use GIF for quick demo animations for this forum. GIF is more convenient for this purpose than making a proper video and uploading it to YouTube or Vimeo. (It's still kinda ugly though.) :D
