How to make an object follow behind another?

Post by Ryanryan »

Hello everyone, I'm working on making an object that resembles a caterpillar/centipede. What I want is for the head to move, and for the body segments to follow the exact path, only slightly behind it. I figured that I could manually do it to an extent with relative keyframing, but was hoping there was a better method to accomplish it.

Using the motion blur layer effect with the opacity set to maximum, I was able to simulate the effect, but when the object stops moving the copies naturally disappear. Here is the video to give an idea of what I'm trying to achieve.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

you could either use follow path, or just duplicate the leading object and stagger the keyframes so they trail

... if you use layer follow path as funks has suggested then remember it's ALT-click on the path to bend the shapes in the vector layer to follow the path
