Create Shape doesn't!

Post by Hellyar »

Sorry... one day I'll stop asking questions!

I'm doing 2.4 in the tutorial of ASP11.

It says draw a line with stroke, but no fill. Done! [Do I get a prize?! :D ]

Then, "use the Create Shape tool to create a second shape... now you have two shapes that are superimposed directly on top of each other."

Not entirely sure what "use" means, I...

... selected the curve and clicked on it with the CS tool. No duplication.
... selected the curve, clicked on it with the CS tool and clicked on the "Create Shape" button in the upper bar. No duplication.

Would someone kindly tell me where I'm being an idiot? Thanks!

After spending hours researching and experimenting, I think I've fathomed it out.

According to...
... the SM videos, it's only used for punching holes in closed shapes;
... the ASP help file, it's only used for specialised stroke/fill actions;
... the ASP pdf tutorial, it's used for duplicating lines, and also for punching holes.

However, this is what it appears to do:
1) With a closed shape fully selected, it acts like the paint bucket tool and applies the fill and stroke;
2) With some of a shape selected, it applies the stroke but not the fill;
3) It punches a hole in an closed shape, using an overlain shape to delineate the hole... however, not as in the tutorial which uses filled/stroked shapes; but only if the shapes are not filled or stroked prior to the Create Shape activation.
4) It does not duplicate shapes.

From the user manual:
Create Shape
Shortcut: U
The Create Shape tool is used to select a region to be filled
with color, or a set of edges to be drawn as an outline. It
operates exactly like the Select Points tool described in
“Select Points” on page 33.

Using the Create Shape tool, select all the points that form
the outer border of the shape you wish to create. If you
select a set of edges that completes an enclosed shape,
a highlighted checkerboard will show you the extent of
the region you are creating. Otherwise, you will just see a
highlighted outline on the selected edges.
When you have the desired region selected, press the
spacebar or press the Create Shape button in the status
bar to actually create a shape from the selected edges.

Thank you, synthsin75...

Yes, that's the specialised stroke/fill actions.

I guess what confused me was that the tutorial focused on the punching holes which doesn't work as described and contradicted the videos. And that it is used to duplicate shapes, which it doesn't appear to do.

The manual is the source I go to last. Watch videos and try to replete what was done. AS has all sorts of quarks that can't be express in a manual.

I have said this many times. AS doesn't work like any other program and it takes time to learn how it dose things.
