Yes, I agree. I need to find someone who is knowledgeable about making audio recordings. I used a decent mic (I think) and did the recommended tweaking in Audacity. It might be the room that needs help.

The room is key, you can hang a towel over the door, or a taller piece of furniture to absorb some of the echo, and cover the mic with a cloth. Experiment, I'm sure you'll find the right balance
