Follow pat funtion change with alt click?

I hadn't used follow motion path in a while so I decided mess around with it a bit. It worked just as I remembered it. Then I noticed an alt click option, and I was curious to what it did. I thought my test shape would warp along the path, but it was veerry distorted and was away from the path; it looked nothing like my test shape. Sometimes when I clicked the path where I wanted it to move, it moved very little, or not at all. Needed some help and found this video.

But I did something really similar to the squares, and got the same results as I did before, and can't figure out how or why. Still determined, I was doing everything I could to figure out how to do what Eskchat did, even staying up past unhealthly hours (true story!). Eventually, I picked the Transform layer tool and begin moving it about and noticed that it was warping along the path. I found out though if i just move my test shape to the right with the Transform layer tool, that it would do just what I wanted it to do.

Don't get me wrong, I am happy with the results! It did exactly what I wanted it to do. But now I'm curious. Did the follow path function change from an older version (I'm using 11.2 pro)? If it didn't, I have no idea what I am doing wrong. Why didn't it work like Eskchat's video showed?
