ASP 11 performance

Post by Yokaiologist »

I'm looking into using asp 11 to do a feature
Mainly frame by frame animated movie
My question is can asp 11 handle large hand drawn scenes

I noticed on webinar with the 'stick fight' animation
That was frame by frame
Was having problems with asp 11 performance
When it was loaded into asp 11
It was chugging along

Can anyone chime in
On if asp 11 slows down when creating a large frame by frame anim
??

I notice a lag when using too many switch layers as well. However I can say that ASP11 is better than ASP10, even in 32 bit mode, it now uses all the cpu for rendering.

The question I have regarding to cpu is does the ASP11 in 32 bit mode uses the hyperthreading as well?
Seem like in ASP 64 bit mode it was using all 8 threading!

I have a i7 2600k and 16gig memory and radeon 6850

Ruscular
Do you think
Asp 11 can handle a large frame to frame
Or will I have a lot of lag time

I run a Macbook pro late 2011 16gb ram

AFAIK the more points you have the harder the cpu works. I don't know if image files are less or more taxing, it may depend on their size. If they are less, it would be nice to have some "render in place" option to convert vectors to images when it makes sense to do so, while saving the original vectors in a disabled folder.

I'm a hand drawn animator
I kno how to use vectors
But I'm interested in just drawing

Will I have to manage points ?

The new freehand tool is much better as for using less point and if you tweak the smooth function. But honestly, I think if you draw it out and then make your character with a skeletal rigging, and then use the FBF for special moves or creating a switch layer for the animation would conserve it better, rather than draw FBF for the whole thing.

I tend to render layers of the project to high resolution quicktime clips and convert all the vector to that. Use the low quality clips for the planning and animation. then sandwich all the high quality video. The quicktime video save the alpha channel in Adobe After effect

Hi Yakaiologist,
The Stickfight animation actually runs fine in animation depending on the display settings.
I used some large brushes in that which the preview actually did preview surprisingly well with GPU 'on', even with an older card.
The chugging happens when other programs interfere like screen capture or screen sharing.
I would recommend new gtx cards, as powerful as you can budget for.
Do some tests, and do note that using the layer comp feature can be very useful in aiding efficiency.
FBF is a new feature in ASP but I'm sure its continued development will be a given as will other tools that are popular when using it.

After working in the program I notice when it starts to lag, and I look in the task manager and it'll show that I have use up 600mb or more memory, and I will save the program, reboot the software and reload what I save and it knock it down to 150mb and no longer lagging.

When I go to render it will use all of my cpu, where can I assign 3 cpu so my system wont bog doing something else?

Is there a better method of refreshing memory usage?

honestly, I think if you plan to do nothing but complex frame by frame, something like TV Paint would work much better for you. The more complex the frames the more issues you're likely to have, particularly with the vectors under the hood. Even with fbf support, AS isn't ideal if that is ALL you want to do.
