Youssef Drawing Syllabus First Edition Kickstarter

Post by lwaxana »

I just finished watching Samantha Youssef's 2 hour live demo and critique session for figure drawing to promote her new book. I found this session extremely educational. One commenter said something like "this 2 hour session > 3 years of art school." I think she will post the recorded version soon, so i just wanted to share the link to her kickstarter:

Also, she recommended the book The Practice and Science of Drawing by Harold Speed, which is available free here: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/14264?m ... e_stranger

She has a very impressive list of clients, but I found eavesdropping on the recording (that's what it felt like!) was kind of a waste of time. She has a tendency to waffle, and laugh nervously, traits which rapidly become annoying. If you are on the receiving end of the online tuition it probably feels very worthwhile, but otherwise I don't see what a disinterested observer would get out of it. Obviously a very talented lady though.
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?

Well the video does take some time to get going; the first half hour is more of a settling in period. But for me, her approach and her information connected the dots on several topics I've read books on, but hadn't really grasped before. For instance, when she talks about the relationship between life drawing, pushing poses, and illustration and how to get the most benefit out of each activity, I felt light bulbs going off. I also like that she discusses different schools of thought in life drawing. And in the critique section, I loved hearing her reasoning as she drew over the submissions. How a person responds to her presentation style is a highly subjective thing and informed by cultural and social context. So if it annoys you, there's not much that can be done. :) But I imagine that having your art background you already have exposure to a lot of these things. Since I am just reading books in my spare time, this kind of presentation helps to make sense of it all.

This is very useful to me as I am also self-learning to draw. I have a lot of books, which cover a lot but don't always connect all the dots. Thanks!

Very useful insights on what an artist thinks about when drawing. In addition to being talented, she seems to be a very genuine and encouraging instructor. I would have liked to taken one of her live classes.
