Any way to disable shape select when using Freehand

I've been using the Freehand tool often lately and after I draw a shape it ASP10 automatically selects that shape (red box). So then if I want to change colors and draw another shape within that same layer, I have to take the time to deselect that last drawn shape before selecting a new color or else it will change the color of my last shape. Very annoying and it slows me down when I want to select different colors rapidly.

I don't know the answer but I totally feel this. I drew two (skin-colored) hands but one keeps turning white over & over again.
I draw freehand & coloring is real unsuccessful hassle for me
